POPULAR INITIATIVE TO BAN MINARETS POSTER

The popular initiative included a graphic advertising campaign in favor of the vote to stop minaret construction. The posters were banned from several areas in Switzerland for their racist and inflammatory overtones.

A woman dressed in a burka is pictured in front of the Swiss flag. The flag has minarets emerging from it in the form of weapons of mass destruction. The text reads, "Stop. Yes to the minaret ban."

The poster subverts the language of Islamic architecture and culture to create an anxiety-laden image of the dangers of Muslims in Switzerland. At the same time, the poster subverts the language of Swiss graphic design, utilizing well-known principles of Swiss modern design but instilling within them a propaganda of hate and fear.
